Browsing Environmental Topics in Databases

General OneFile
Use the Subject option on the search box to search for subjects of choice. One subject heading is Environmental Sciences, which points to articles on environmental protection, global warming, energy, pollution control, etc.

Several databases in UDLib/SEARCH have links to environmental information in their browsable links. Below are a few select databases. The links you should use are specified for each database.

OneFile: Science
Use the "Subject" tab to browse environmental subjects of your choosing; suggested terms are Environmental Policy, Human Environment Interactions, Ecological Research, and Wildlife Conservation.

Kids InfoBits: Science and Math
From this general section on science, information at the elementary level can be found in the subdivisions "Biology & Nature" and "Earth Sciences."

SIRS Discoverer This link opens in a new window
From the "Browse Subject Tree" section, select "Environment." There are 50 general articles plus links to 15 additional subjects within the discipline.

In Context: Opposing Viewpoints
There is a section on "Energy and Environmentalism."

Most of the general databases in UDLib/SEARCH contain environmental information. Use subject lists and keyword searches by your specific topic. Databases that can be particularly useful are listed here.

Look for the Pro vs. Con subject "Conservation of Natural Resources."

Open up the menu on "Science -- View All" and look for appropriate topics; suggested are Biomes, Endangered Species, Global Warming, Pollution, and Wetlands.

Databases for Environmental Topics

OneFile: Environmental Studies
Described as "the global reference on the environment, energy, and natural resources," this is the primary database for environmental topics.

The following databases have extensive information on environmental science topics. The database may either be devoted to environmental topics or have a direct link to a section on environmental topics in the first layer of subjects presented. Direct pathways are presented to go straigt to the groupings of environmental topics.

Science in Context: Environmental Science
Includes over 350 academic journal articles, over 400 magazine articles plus over 60 news articles, and featured content, audio and video clips on topics including the "study of the natural environment and the effects on that environment of human activity and natural events."
Science Online: Environmental Sciences
A major section in this database of diagrams, experiments, biographies and videos covering biodiversity, climate change, ecology, pollution, and ten additional subject areas.

E-Books in Environmental Science

	Student Animal Life Resource offers coverage of the animal kingdom, ranging from the simple -- sponges and corals -- to the complex -- mammals.
	UXL Encyclopedia of Biomes contains current information on twelve of Earth's major biomes and their many component ecosystems.
	UXL Encyclopedia of Science provides clear, nontechnical information on more than 600 scientific theories, life forms, inventions, controversies and discoveries.
	UXL Encyclopedia of Water Science explores water science and issues from an international perspective.

Environment Science Lesson Plans

Environmental Resources Lesson Plans
Provides lessons plans for climate change, Earth Day, ecology, biodiversity and carbon footprint reduction.
